Torah of Our Mothers & Accepting Mitzvot
With Dr. Caroline Peyser-Bollag
Fall – Winter Series 2018
Nov 21, 2018 – Jan 23, 2019
The mother-daughter relationship is an essential part of a preteen girl’s formative process, as she prepares to become a Bat Mitzvah. We will examine selected Mitzvot, with the topic of relationships at the center of our learning. We will focus on seven important Mitzvot, and learn how they bring us closer to Hashem, to parents, to friends & classmates, and to the community at large. Each class consists of three parts: introduction of the topic while raising pertinent questions; source-based mother-daughter chevruta learning & discussion; creative group discussion and activity (writing, drama, etc.).
- קידוש החודש: Sanctity of time in religious life, and role of rabbis in determining Halacha.
- ונשמרתם מאוד לנפשותיכם: Care of our bodies, the value of maintaining good health, Halachic attitude to piercing, tattoos, etc..
- Our responsibilities toward others: Respect for our parents, Love others as we love ourselves, Kiddush Hashem & Chillul Hashem. We will explore stories, passed down by our Talmudic sages, which illustrate how our behavior impacts those around us, and will discuss the implications on our lives.
A good level of Hebrew is required as well as an interest in textual study.
